<p> I have iterated on at least 3 different means of hanging my laptop on the monitor tree. Here is the latest arrangement in the prototype form. It still looks kind of like a jumble of wires here but it's very ad-hoc. essentially i've got my laptop sliding into interior groves of a box, with a lot of the wiring plus a supplemental cooling fan hidden underneath. I've learned that laptops are very tempermental with regard to heat dissipation, and bluetooth interference.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilPIcB8F0mAF0TGeGe_2kI8dWU3-U0yUovSihh1RAVpOVLd2kDlp1nxg5HRE7JO29BdwIu-dVXkU7tVwsDgN1iXv3BizzSocz-IUF9abci8DcYVnF9elwMR3hgg0du-kXLozhjNBVWp7U/s4032/PXL_20210801_022949573.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;"><img alt="" border="0" height="600" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilPIcB8F0mAF0TGeGe_2kI8dWU3-U0yUovSihh1RAVpOVLd2kDlp1nxg5HRE7JO29BdwIu-dVXkU7tVwsDgN1iXv3BizzSocz-IUF9abci8DcYVnF9elwMR3hgg0du-kXLozhjNBVWp7U/s600/PXL_20210801_022949573.jpg"/></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Here we see the what's happening inside. i've labeled cables in the photo. This is a new 120mm fan that i ordered off of amazon, i believe there's quite a market for these things for folks building their own console for gaming, etc. these fans are ratet around 30db, which is noticible but maybe tollerable...not sure. my main concern is that my bluetooth connections can be erratic. the keyboard works fine, trackpad works ok most of the time, but my mouse is neigh unusable. I'm not sure if there's too much interference with the wires here or what. So this laptop caddy is still a work-in-progress

<p> This is a continuation of a <a href="http://19711007.blogspot.com/2020/01/multimodal-monitor-tree-prototype.html" target="_blank">monitor tree concept</a> that i've been working on for some time now. With the pandemic, I mostly worked from home, and having a mobile base for my system really made life a lot easier, allowing me to bring my system to a couch, or the kitchen, or the desk, or...
<p>I've spent a lot of time over the year trying different hoisting mechanisms for my monitor tree prototype, finally settling on block-n-tackle (we'll get to that a bit later). It's time to begin work on the next version of this piece, focusing on a bit nicer finish and using sapele. Here's where the tree stands today
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZDATwDGXqH010aV8TB2FBKie_h7MQ60OFmSz43qZyRfs-mkgmDb1bIlmZnMCfefHGofvgbiYhqSLCHCn6gsZg3JyJMeqEFCU4mu-sQkn3cnz0pRjTLxELywYhyPf4jAMnjFEdijassH8/s4032/PXL_20210728_012234754.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;"><img alt="" border="0" height="600" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZDATwDGXqH010aV8TB2FBKie_h7MQ60OFmSz43qZyRfs-mkgmDb1bIlmZnMCfefHGofvgbiYhqSLCHCn6gsZg3JyJMeqEFCU4mu-sQkn3cnz0pRjTLxELywYhyPf4jAMnjFEdijassH8/s600/PXL_20210728_012234754.jpg"/></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p> The feet are just half-lapped together. The angle that they're joined at is not square, but 96deg sweep at the front. this minimizes the depth of the piece and reduces chances of bumping my feet when i'm seated at a desk.

<p>The Post is built up from 1/2" thick resawn wood, with some "plugs" at the ends from some redwood offcuts i had. The feet will be carefully finger-joined to the base. Sorry i forgot to take a photo with the thing apart to show what it looks like, but it's hollow on the inside. This also allows the possibility of a chase where i could run the power cord.

<p>the first cuts for the finger joint are fairly challenging. Try not to worry and just let the saw do the work.

I take as little time as possible getting a handle glued up and didn't even think to show construction fotos, but imagine making a thin relief using a chisel and a router plane for the blade shank into 2 1/2" thick pieces of padouk wood (just because it's reasonably hard and there was anerrant piece of it in the shop.

Use some 5 minute 2part epoxy and a few clamps to produce this rough piece

this is how i like to make my knife handles. maybe a little shorter than the handle that Wood-Tools makes, but it's a little thicker in the middle, where you typically apply a lot of force as you "roll" the knife blade towards you during spoon cutting. it fits my meat hooks fairly well. wood handles rule.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
only had one afternoon this weekend to make this little serving spoon. punches above weight in capacity, but s stubby handle. would be useful in a family style meal where there's a bowl of rice everyone digs into. This one is still a little thick and will be cleaned up a bit once the wood dries

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to dive into the stubby section, seeing 3 short but wide spoons if i cut the thing into 1/3rds well enough. My Ryoba rip teeth cut through the green long grain like i was slicing rare steak.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was a hand-tool only endeavor and not just to be a Luddite. a quick series of stop cuts like this can then be easily broken off with a chisel to make a flat underside for a reference surface while holding the blank down on my lap table
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxz5nFcliPP9UfGHEphK-GeDzHM3O8OHV283AcASdHJUPQt6r8xUloxtnM8GdrwVWUHd7TM-d2g_8IKcFS7vj0WDPU1iNEw0fdCVHkta-VtjYew9gLUfieFfEB1A0XV8P8P93Y7pg4EfM/s1600/IMG_20200509_184241.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxz5nFcliPP9UfGHEphK-GeDzHM3O8OHV283AcASdHJUPQt6r8xUloxtnM8GdrwVWUHd7TM-d2g_8IKcFS7vj0WDPU1iNEw0fdCVHkta-VtjYew9gLUfieFfEB1A0XV8P8P93Y7pg4EfM/s640/IMG_20200509_184241.jpg" width="640" height="480" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="1200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then roughed out the profile on the top of the spoon. this is the bark-side facing part of the split. The spoon is gonna be wide and scoopable. not much of a handle, but that's ok
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIpGY-QEjQUvPGg7xxAROnQ1jaqADHqJRuRQ1sGbwf3woZucFCGnk86Dyp269BjRAdEq6vYysqSgWBRkb_9Ky6MLWG0a7gzhMB-elIYIH_j5ZR8vYMutsIrv4kssVml3ANBYkPoGWWO3k/s1600/IMG_20200509_184102.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIpGY-QEjQUvPGg7xxAROnQ1jaqADHqJRuRQ1sGbwf3woZucFCGnk86Dyp269BjRAdEq6vYysqSgWBRkb_9Ky6MLWG0a7gzhMB-elIYIH_j5ZR8vYMutsIrv4kssVml3ANBYkPoGWWO3k/s640/IMG_20200509_184102.jpg" width="640" height="480" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="1200" /></a></div>

<p>
Dad sent a section of laurel from the farm years ago. I had it sitting in the garage staring at me like the velveteen rabbit all this time, not sure what to do with it until this weekend.
<p>
Forgot to take a pic of the whole section, but here's one half after ripping. about 3" in dia.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOQPz6tkLrbYN90luUk6Z_LEw0ihtbI7N1IGu4LsTLWbrJe5CDm1RvXBsOsb3yksmm45_aeC0qlHd7R-UfYsFF4KLDF14Qw9YO3aq7U67J2nABtmelD_qBH4oKoUR3TwypS7djY087Gac/s1600/IMG_20200501_180550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOQPz6tkLrbYN90luUk6Z_LEw0ihtbI7N1IGu4LsTLWbrJe5CDm1RvXBsOsb3yksmm45_aeC0qlHd7R-UfYsFF4KLDF14Qw9YO3aq7U67J2nABtmelD_qBH4oKoUR3TwypS7djY087Gac/s640/IMG_20200501_180550.jpg" width="480" height="640" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think my favorite part about making spoons is at this moment where the profile (crank) is roughed out and you get to sort of let the wood tell you what shape it should take
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii77vBPXj12z2qvmq1fqd0zEq3IwaM4u0lEW9s_cvoNCOA7XylryKhOJWBI-S5V1rF8P2aVkFZa8UV2Ug3-1Lbg_Pf7A2qpXQyd91Q2xpEUKRzbkbTKoz0j9sU1nUj4QG24GX4rcfQftU/s1600/IMG_20200503_185539.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii77vBPXj12z2qvmq1fqd0zEq3IwaM4u0lEW9s_cvoNCOA7XylryKhOJWBI-S5V1rF8P2aVkFZa8UV2Ug3-1Lbg_Pf7A2qpXQyd91Q2xpEUKRzbkbTKoz0j9sU1nUj4QG24GX4rcfQftU/s640/IMG_20200503_185539.jpg" width="640" height="480" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="1200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But carving the outside of the bowl into facets is pretty fun, too. a sharp knife leaves a waxy smooth surface that is hard to beat
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCUusQzqMbpB0nuD3rhkD2to1uMd1PHjJERzPxsJ4FyQ0_0ptlughRrK_QrGnoPBvRwm37qMhGqLBELhXxdJnUc72MHU7Ku02bG1WwsqjEJCSr-3L38DbFe8Sl9xY8Y32RTgL23QHl0Ow/s1600/IMG_20200503_191436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCUusQzqMbpB0nuD3rhkD2to1uMd1PHjJERzPxsJ4FyQ0_0ptlughRrK_QrGnoPBvRwm37qMhGqLBELhXxdJnUc72MHU7Ku02bG1WwsqjEJCSr-3L38DbFe8Sl9xY8Y32RTgL23QHl0Ow/s640/IMG_20200503_191436.jpg" width="480" height="640" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were a few knots that I did not anticipate. so not much heavy lifting duty for these, but i loved the way the wood responded to carving. the wind in the wood's grain led me to these chicane handles.

worked through my last billet of black walnut that L. Gandsey gave to me from his offcut pile. I like this wood for kitchen utensils: it's pretty durable, food inert, and is also not so difficult to carve (or at least not as hard as maple!)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p>countless helpings of apple sauce and pies made by mom originate from this one Lodi tree planted almost 50 years ago on mom and dad's farm. Dad sent me a few lengths from a recent pruning to try out. these were smaller ones, meant to test the wood for carving, and justify sending more.
<p>my findings? yes, please keep 'em coming
<p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsPwS0d3GQzhRfmtY6lDQsS_HoRY9yGvKJxfp7DM677l9GcS1CJSxg4Gu3JBxmESJHxTL8pH2oMmjPbcqfjlp0Y8KppfZd9WPs5Px6u_U_9k9fBTcxySDnelAZZZljBBVJi62AKgaEu6k/s1600/IMG_20200418_154453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsPwS0d3GQzhRfmtY6lDQsS_HoRY9yGvKJxfp7DM677l9GcS1CJSxg4Gu3JBxmESJHxTL8pH2oMmjPbcqfjlp0Y8KppfZd9WPs5Px6u_U_9k9fBTcxySDnelAZZZljBBVJi62AKgaEu6k/s640/IMG_20200418_154453.jpg" width="480" height="640" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the shorter section had the heart off center, so it allowed me to make a spoon with a fairly large bowl. this could be a serving spoon of some sort. the green wood is pleasant to carve. it cuts cleanly and also with much more ease than if it were dry
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5qE6u40MonuMQqpsyY9o95QloyXKkHz68l7PmYmHF-bz7Hmdg11mTS5c0WINwOaRsUDF9oU2S38_kqiImTXB9xKGHlcAee03dXvKXQptOaJBHj1tHszfn3f75mLiYDOgx341k1thIN5Q/s1600/IMG_20200419_172642.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5qE6u40MonuMQqpsyY9o95QloyXKkHz68l7PmYmHF-bz7Hmdg11mTS5c0WINwOaRsUDF9oU2S38_kqiImTXB9xKGHlcAee03dXvKXQptOaJBHj1tHszfn3f75mLiYDOgx341k1thIN5Q/s640/IMG_20200419_172642.jpg" width="640" height="480" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="1200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The aggresively crooked piece was a bit more challenging, with a knot off to one side the grain was a bit unstable. I kept at it with my 2-hander hook knife since it allows for a lot of power to be applied into the cut.

Gandsey offcuts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p> I had another blank/offcut from Lawrence Gandsey's shop in a wood that I haven't worked before but i _think_ it might be Elm? not sure. it's not quite as hard as maple, but it cleaves nice and clean with a sharp knife. the wood is a bit tawnier and caramel colored especially when you get a wax-smooth cut directly from your knives.
<p> This shape of spoon, i call a "spoochula" because it is very useful in stir-frying vegetables off a flat bottom pan. it acts as a spatula but has a dish towards the back that allows you to scoop the cooked vegetables into a serving dish.

One of my Mora 106's on a leather strop that i made today from a cut of leather that Dad used for walls of the baby crib that all us kids spent time in. I usually use an 8000 waterstone for honing, but the strop is nice to have in the kit.

<p>this is kind of personal, but I don't really care anymore.
<p>my best spoon, made a few weeks ago from curbside tree trimmings. the handle is so delicate. it is absurd!
<p>I don't care, because i think about this spoon, with its fairly large bowl, and its diminutive handle, and how someone who's older and needs to be fed, how what is in the bowl of that spoon might be all they can handle today. a delicate handle for the spoon fosters delicate movement towards your mom's mouth, feeding her broth as she tries to fathom what has happened and why she is not able to get out of bed.

I woke up thursday morning this week and decided to do a self portrait.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This weekend, i set forth on making a salad service set from some maple offcut that <a href="http://lawrencegandsey.com/">Lawrence Gandsey</a> gave me. Not sure about the "fork". one could charitably say it evokes tulips but i think you could also say it evokes bart simpson.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align:left;">
<p>tried to make a ladle from a thick piece of alder that my pop sent me years ago. the grain is fairly predictable but it got a little squirrelly and i misjudged how deep i was cutting with the hook knife. sliced right through the bowl in that one area. I've done this before a few times. at least i got a few more spoons left from this stick of alder.
<p> a lot of advice out there says to carve the outside of the bowl first before beavering out the inside. I think it might depend a lot on whether the wood is green or not? i'm having more success with spoons where i get the inside of the bowl cleaned up before proceeding to the outside.
<p> hmm

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A couple spoons today from the spare limbs that i found earlier this week from some curbside tree trimming.
what struck me today and

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the branches had natural crooks in them. this is the layout approach taken. not following any strict pattern aside from applying the natural bend in the tree to establish the crank in the spoon.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiADtkhcZCyno1qkYgM3qBqXXWmhpStX8pdSHsiFQzVbUdcJQZeprq-AGxrdW0w6qS4W6GHCAyBG2LlthO5g8d6bue8ALaNSN4lB953r-O3gYylITFNjRjkbSEh81CHazZf31bZmmvHo/s1600/IMG_20200404_175129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOiADtkhcZCyno1qkYgM3qBqXXWmhpStX8pdSHsiFQzVbUdcJQZeprq-AGxrdW0w6qS4W6GHCAyBG2LlthO5g8d6bue8ALaNSN4lB953r-O3gYylITFNjRjkbSEh81CHazZf31bZmmvHo/s640/IMG_20200404_175129.jpg" width="640" height="480" data-original-width="1600" data-original-height="1200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p>
Some folks like to carve out the outside of the bowl BEFORE cutting the inside. i've tried both today and have to say that making the bowl first is a bit easier for my process. i think it has to do with having the wood as a billet underneath which makes it more easy to clamp to my knee bench with the rope-holddown. i then find it easier to pare away the outside of the bowl afterwards, using stop-cuts and just carefully paring away with a very sharp chisel.
<p> here, i use the back of my gouge to check symmetry of the bowl

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i'm establishing the overall shape of the spoon here. the grain kind of tells you what the shape of the handle should be. following the grain reminds me so much of shaping oak chair spindles in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

while on my morning jog today, i found this limbed tree near my house with a few promising branches. i don't know what the species is, but the limbs looked pretty fresh. so after returning home from the run, i rolled out on my bicycle with my ryoba saw to cut a few useful sections for spoon carving. i wish i snapped a shot of the tree and it's leaves. it's actually a pretty nice carving wood in green.
<p>
My first spoon from the wood was not so well planned, as it had the pith running through the handle. good practice tho.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
this other spoon i made today originates from a crook in one of the branches where there was a bifurcation off the leader branch. the fibers all run collinear with the crank in the spoon. it's something i have not had a lot of experience with, carving directly from the tree, but for me i receive good feedback from the grain in the wood to "tell" my knife where to go. this also means you can't just apply a "spoon template" to the wood and force it to obey the lines. you have to flow with it and let the spoon emerge from the wood. believe me: hours can pass in the blink of an eye while engaged in this work.

<p> after carving a few pieces of hard maple from the shop, I wanted something a little less severe, but not as soft as poplar. There were a few off cuts of sapele hanging around. While it might seem hard, it actually carves nicely. not nearly as soft as the poplar I was carving yesterday, but it still works easily with hand tools. The grain can be a bit squirrelly, reversing against your knife. It takes a bit of feel to know when to stop and cut from the other direction.
<p>Over the week, as we all have dealt with our new restrictions, I've noticed more people outside walking, sometimes saying "hi" or just a hand wave. Sometimes we talk. Yesterday, a pair strolled by, a parent/guardian/aunt/grandma and a 10 year old on a skateboard. The kid paused and watched from the curb at me carving on the porch. We said "hi" and they continued on. Today they were passing on the other side of the street, same deal with the skateboarder, and noticed me on the porch. I waved them over.
<p>It's awkward because normally one would want to at least be able to hold the spoon I was carving, just to get a feel. Or even, take a hold of the sloyd knives, or chisels. But it's not OK these days and so they step onto the porch, I welcome them and we keep some distance. The child's name is "Gus" and his guardian's name is "Dia" and we spend some time talking about what I'm doing with all this spoon work, and it's quite clear that Gus is very compelled by the obscure tools and how they could form a useful object from all the shavings on the deck. His favorite class in school right now is dance (Hip Hop). I let them know that they are welcome to stop by for some spoon carving introductions once "all this blows over".
<p>I kinda like the look of my porch these days.

paring the shallow taper of the work's underside goes pretty easily just with a 3/4" chisel

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
when narrowing down stock, making small cross-grain stop cuts ease the hewing process. The ryoba saw i'm using has the rip teeth going cross grain. This is the vanity of taking photos of my work instead of actually doing the work (-:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now a progression of refinements. The sapele is actually a really nice wood for spoon carving. I have NO idea if it can impose any flavor on what I'm cooking with. hopefully not.

Angostura Bittershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18059116265834492301noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102624311203641219.post-72627666553998013642020-03-20T22:42:00.001-07:002020-03-20T22:42:48.250-07:00Another afternoon on the front porch
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align:left;">
<p>I got this offcut of poplar ("Piedmont Poplar?") from <a href="http://lawrencegandsey.com/index.html">Lawrence Gandsey</a> while out on a jog a while ago. His workshop sits right behind Lanesplitter's pizza in Oakland. I'd catch glimpses into this shop every time I'd pass by. There is gigantic silhouette from an old band saw in the window and other machines. The windows had custom grilles welded up to look like vines. Anyway, while on that jog, I saw the roll-up door open and there was activity inside. Mr. Gandsey was actually working on what appeared to be a large slab table, and noticed me stopped in my tracks looking inside with a cowed expression. He invited me in and after introductions asked what kind of wood working I did. At the time I was making spoons of various sorts and led with that. So he set aside a box of offcuts a few days later. All sorts of local species, and more. Hard maple, black walnut, Australian blood wood...all for spoon carving, etc.
<p>
Today, I pulled one of my saw horses out onto the front porch after working from home, and began a spoochula out of the poplar. All non-essential gatherings of people have been shut down by the state, with most businesses closed. Personal distancing rules are in effect (6' by law). Lots of people were outside, walking the neighborhood, passing by while i was carving. They were walking dogs. walking restless kids. Or just walking themselves, lost in thought, getting out of the house for a bit. My neighbor Ari 2 doors down, we hardly talk, but this evening she was out for a stroll and we connected. She's a sign language interpreter, and all her work has been cancelled. Another neighbor, Dane, was walking his pit-bull and chihuahua. He's a general contractor with a few jobs in progress, but they've been paused indefinitely.
<p>Joe D. wrote me about an earlier post showing a way to hold work in your lap using a loop of rope threaded into a plank that you support on your lap while seated. your feet keep tension on the line to provide a surprising amount of holding capability. it's also much less fatiguing this way.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align:left;">
This is where I left off for the day. Quite long of handle, but I kinda like the extra length for the way it feels.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align:left;">
Got a little too thin at one section. The wood is so soft, it's almost like balsa. Not sure how long I'll be able to use it for cooking, but this wood is great for carving without wearing myself out. Will have to look for more of this for just experimenting with.

<p>
Whenever I'm in a complex public situation, like the DMV, or the airport, or the pre-thanksgiving grocery store craze, I resort to a lyric of a song from the bluegrass group, Old Crow Medicine Show: "we're all in this together". It's an aphorism that must have started when civilization did. In my mind, it may be the essence of why the golden rule exists in the first place.
<p>
This is Friday, March 13th. It is the first day that our laboratory has asked all non-wetlab personnel to stay home and work from there to reduce the virus exposure. For me, I've felt like having cantilevered backwards, weightless, over some giant space of unknown. The main draw I have to this company is the teamwork, and how much I adore my team mates, and working with them closely. But if my staying home and off public transit reduces risk to the production lab, so be it. I will do what i can from my home console.
<p>
I live in Oakland, CA, USA, where patchy clouds and fog would break before noon. Jasmine has it's first big expression of flowers this time of year, and the back trellis is heaving with the buds in various states of bloom. The scent escapes words in the still air of morning.

The cats love to draw out into the back yard after their morning feeding. They tentatively step onto the deck, smell the air, and move out. Here, Tux is with his haunches low in a very cautious stance, I think because a neighbor's tom has beat him up a bit over the last few months (no signs of him today).

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The apple tree out back, which had been here before we moved in, is still productive. I pruned it in January, and it's now sprouting some growth buds. While talking to my dad in the morning, he said that he and mom developed a pruning system to maximize southern light exposure to the canopy. This tree naturally leans south, but my pruning method had never taken into consideration the orientation of our latitude to the sun. The farm where I grew up on, and where he still lives, is at 48deg latitude, and more critical to southern exposure than here. But still, it maximizes sun exposure. Dad made satellites for a living and understands much more intrinsically about how we are just specks, a thin film coating a spinning rock, orbiting one of uncountable suns. maybe next year I'll work on that pruning technique.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p>
For practicality's sake, I return to my own hands to guide the way when my head is unsure where to go next. These hands tend to the practice of making stuff, and i think they especially favor sloyd craft.
<p>
My dear cycling friend, Takumi, was able to bring his two daughters, Mia and Isa by as school was closed. They have nascent interest in carving spoons from a video I forwarded to Takumi of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbdTc233FtM">peter galbert </a>reviewing his techniques and why he does this. They were curious where one might be able to begin with this sort of craft.
<p>
Today, we are using soft pine as an introductory wood for carving. It's softer than other woods, but that makes it more accessible. With a coat of bee's wax, i think they will be OK for just general use as eating spoons. Soups and oatmeal and so-forth.
<p>
I'm trying to come up with the simplest spoon carving system possible. no band saws. no big iron vices. work-holding that is improvised and accessible. a shave horse or spoon mule appliance would be great, but it's still a bit more work than what i want to accomplish here, which is to inspire some creative, lateral thinking. yeah, the appliances can help you make things more efficiently, for sure! but today, with all that we are worrying about and underlying stressors, maybe slowing it down a bit and just taking smaller bites out of the wood at a time is the best recipe. can you relate?
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We practiced 3 different knife strokes today. two are used around the neck of the bowl as it transitions to the handle. you have to carefully pare towards you and away from you in a controlled fashion. there are ways to do this safely as long as you abide by a few basic rules. the main one being, no part of you should be down wind of where that blade is going.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p>
Here's Isa, working on the spoon. We only practiced on one spoon today, but the idea is that they all will make their own spoons.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgSUutKqt6z3eBI2N8jRPoZK05tYczjwwlKUAwGDYNocIR9DxyG7MIlkZPR0E-26SkqIc-kp7IgZ-kh-ILariQcpe9pwWgn8CSNYGP8WzlFfr4nTsI8osiydY0Z0etq5YFMDWK6850Vc/s1600/IMG_0414.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgSUutKqt6z3eBI2N8jRPoZK05tYczjwwlKUAwGDYNocIR9DxyG7MIlkZPR0E-26SkqIc-kp7IgZ-kh-ILariQcpe9pwWgn8CSNYGP8WzlFfr4nTsI8osiydY0Z0etq5YFMDWK6850Vc/s640/IMG_0414.JPG" width="480" height="640" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="1600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now here's Mia taking a turn. This was the week of March 14th (3.14). the kids celebrate Pi the entire week, and Mia is wearing a Henna inscription on her hand in observance. pretty cool i think (-:

I wanted a mobile base for my monitors so that they could be positioned at various work levels, from couch to desk, to countertop. Casters and legs splayed in a squashed "X" to fit into awkward spots better. The hardware consists of an articulating dual arm wall mount monitor stand. I purchased it off amazon for 75 bucks and it can handle my 32" monitors.

the legs are 60" in length, offset-lap-jointed at 24", leaving 36" long ends. It's not square, but 96deg or so. the longer arms of the X aim forward because the monitors shift the center of mass forward. I wanted an increased splay angle facing forwards because they will be reaching under my desk and i figured that'd interfere less with my feet.

inspired by other sloyd knife makers, like <a href="https://www.reidschwartz.net/shop/sloyd-knife-wood-scabbard-bfj7t">Reid Schwarz</a>, i made some scabbards for my freshly handled Mora 106 knives. wood on hand for this kind of scabbard was ash, very springy but prone to splitting. wood is a good material to remember as a spring!

the operation involves relieving 1/2 of the knife using whatever means necessary on two pieces of wood, gluing together and then shaping the end result to your fancy. for me, i'm not interested in wearing these scabbards off my hip, but more to protect the blades.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
this is the knife blank you get from morakniv. i ground up a little bit of the blade edge so that it was separated from the hilt of the handles on my bench grinder.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I forgot to take action shots of the handles getting glued up. it's a "clam shell" construction, where you have two halves of the handle, and route out the knife bolt into one side. I traced with a pencil and used a chisel and a small router plane to get the blade to fit snug on one side. i dont think it has to fit super perfect because i used epoxy with glass fibers mixed into it. in my experience this bonds metal to wood pretty well. I did abrade the knife bolt and clean it up with mineral spirits before assembly.
<p>
I used two woods here: padouk, and afromosia. i had some random offcuts in the bits box and these both have interlocked grain which would do well as knife handles i think

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I ended up using my small japanese block plane to achieve the bevel on the handle edges, along with a spoke shave. the padouk was more well behaved, the afromosia was quite wild and so i had to resort to sandpaper/scrapers to refine the facets.

I finally used an old beater chisel to clean up the epoxy squeeze-out at the hilt.

my new hand tool storage, a chest of drawers that perches on the caster rails of this improvised cart/desk. there are shell pulls on the front edge of the top which makes it a breeze to reposition this chest wherever the task is. it's very usable, and i'm looking forward to putting it through its paces for oncoming projects. I already have one small project under the belt which gave me some assurance.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made loop drawer pulls from pine offcuts that i roughed out on the machines in batch, but then applied my sloyd knife to give them a hand friendly faceted surface. I then painted them a dark grayish purple. they will be attached with 1" #8 brass skrews, going right through the front. it's okay, i'm okay with that.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">the color choices are a little different. i'm very much colorblind, and from an early age i would mix any colors with gray/black/white to mute them. didn't even know why i was doing it but i think the process was a way to bridge the gap with the color perceiving world. i've always liked this effect because it tends to quiet the colors. here, i decided to start with a light band of white and progress green towards the bottom, and purple to the top. i can only imagine it looks kind of odd to folks who see color in a more subjective way.</div>
