Emmert Pattern Maker's Vice Repair Question

Hey there colleagues - Divine Providence sent a genuine Emmert's patternmaker's vice to me, and I cannot wait to start a restoration thread on this ingenious piece of early 20c engineering. Sadly, the vice arrived with a critical lever broken off. I'm wondering if anyone out there has some ideas on how I might go about repairing this cast iron? Something deep in my core says JB Weld won't cut it.

  1. JB Weld wouldn't work. Needs to be brazed

  2. ditto on the brazing - you'll exert way too much force on the lever for JB Weld

  3. Go to an automotive machine shop, or speed shop (where repair/mods to cast iron heads and engine blocks are done) they could direct to a qualified welder. it does need to be brazed, preferably arc welded with a high nickel content rod to give strength...but "tourched" brass could also work...it would be best to disassemble it because in a perfect environment the base metal or part needs to be heated to a high temperature so the action of brazing or "welding" does not effect the surrounding area with cracks from expansion/contraction.

    1. Agree with Joe M ...as you don't want too hear the deadly "TINK" ( cast iron cracking due to improper heating)

  5. after looking at the above parts list...the "cam ring" looks to be the part and at 125.00....probably cheaper than a shop would weld it for you...unless they take it on as a "challenge" for cheap. Was the package insured?

  7. Thank you fellas! - Yep, welding it is the way to go. I'd rather not buy replacement parts...i luckily have a friend who is an experienced welder and he can help me. I'll post more when I get this thing fixed up.
